  • The Measure

Commissioned by London College of Fashion in its centenary year and edited and conceived by Louise Clarke, contributors to The Measure include Jimmy Choo, Giles Deacon, Zandra Rhodes, Paul Smith, Mario Testino and Vivienne Westwood.

Canvassing a cross section of fashion and design practitioners, academics and historians, The Measure asks each contributor to reflect on the effect London has had on contemporary culture – and specifically fashion – over the last century.

The images (right hand page) and text (left hand page) are strictly separated allowing an already image-rich book to be read purely as a visual essay. This demarcation is exaggerated by placing the image page at right angles.

The index and contents page are combined in a fold-out back cover. The position of each entry relates both to the page number and the eponymous tape measure positioned alongside.

Tim Gutt’s Tall Fashion image envelopes the outside, playfully interpreting the book title, and making an unexpected and engaging cover.

For the book launch a limited edition poster dustjacket was made featuring Nick Knight’s 3D Naomi Campbell image. This lustrous, black and gold wrapping gave the book great visual impact at a party attended by many of the contributors.

William Hall contributed an essay on Terry Jones, the founder and creative director of i-D magazine.
