‘Architect and designer John Pawson is renowned for his calm, uncluttered, flawless spaces. Annie Bell is a celebrated food writer. Together they bring their philosophy of simplicity to the kitchen. Living and Eating is about enriching the experience of life by paring it down to what is essential. This is first and foremost a cookery book, with food that is simple, comforting and delicious.’

The design reinforces Pawson and Bell’s ideals, without rejecting the user’s needs. Living and Eating has only one font used at one size throughout. Although bold is used for chapter titles, there are no italics or additional variations anywhere in the book, including the imprint, index and title page.

The rigour demonstrated in Living and Eating is difficult to achieve in a convincing manner. Far from being a self-conscious statement, the application has many benefits, not least practical and simple navigation, and good legibility.

Working with photographer Christoph Kicherer, better known for his architectural and landscape work, resulted in images that reflect a fresh, direct approach to food photography.
